History of Skokie
Today, Skokie, IL, self-promoted as “The World’s Largest Village,” is part of the Chicago street grid and served by the Chicago Transit Authority. It was first known as Niles Centre when incorporated in 1888. The name was converted to American spelling around 1910—Niles Center—and the Indian name Skokie was chosen in 1940.
A housing boom in the 1920s was followed by the Great Depression, and housing development wouldn’t pick up again until the 1940s and 1950s. In 1934, the body of bank-robber Baby Face Nelson was left in a ditch here by his accomplices. Two United States Supreme Court cases were focused on Skokie—in 1977, it was the Nationalist Socialist Party of America v. Village of Skokie, and, in 2001, Solid Waste Agency of Northern Cook County (SWANCC) v. U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.
The NSPA attempted to march here in 1977 and 1978 as an attempt to demonstrate itself as a political entity. At first, the village’s government denied the request, but the American Civil Liberties Union ruled on its behalf. Further court rulings led to the group holding a rally in Chicago’s Marquette Park instead.
The U.S. Supreme Court was also involved in overturning a federal migratory bird rule based on a 2001 move. In 2001, the village created a solid waste disposal site on an isolated wetland. The resulting lawsuit was the subject of Solid Waste Agency of Northern Cook Cty. V. Army Corps of Engineers.

The Skokie Festival of Cultures is held every May.
