A Model Planned Community
Designed by Calvert Vaux and Frederick Law Olmstead in 1869, Riverside was incorporated by 1875. Most of it is part of a National Historic Landmark known as the Riverside Landscape Architecture District, which was designated in 1970. Many argue Riverside, IL is the first planned community in the nation.
The original plan called for curvilinear streets to follow the contours of the land around the Des Plaines River. A village square was built by the railroad station, and various large and small parks were placed throughout town. The original Riverside Improvement Company established to build the community was dissolved after the Great Chicago Fire of 1871 and a financial crisis in 1873 but, in September 1875, a village government was formed.
Architects such as Frank Lloyd Wright, Calvert Vaux, Daniel Burnham, and others designed various homes and estates in the village. Residential development was spurred by smaller home construction in the 1920s and 1930s. Its population peaked in 1970, but many of its bungalows and large Victorian homes from the early 20th century have been well-preserved.
The present-day downtown has many restaurants, coffee shops, and antique shops. A wealthy, highly educated, professional population supports the community’s arts programs and highly rated public school district. Real estate here is some of the most expensive in the United States. Numerous amenities, low crime, and a stable housing market make the entire village of Riverside a desirable place to live.
