For thousands of years, the land occupied by the village was a hunting ground for Native Americans. Its original name was Fullersburg. Settler Ben Fuller arrived here in 1835 by horseback and covered wagon from Upstate New York and built a Greek Revival house in 1840. Originally on York Road, it was recently moved to a forest preserve and restored by the Ben Fuller Museum Association.
Oak Brook was incorporated in 1958. Prior to then, local residents identified themselves as living in Oak Brook, as opposed to nearby Elmhurst or Hinsdale, while civic leader and landowner Paul Butler worked to have the community recognized as an independent entity. In 1962, land was annexed and later became the location for the Oakbrook Center shopping mall.
Today, recreational amenities, including a golf course, polo fields, ball fields, and swimming and tennis facilities, can be found, thanks to Paul Butler’s avid interest in sports. Today, these are part of the 270-acre Oak Brook Sports Core. A focus on community preservation began in 1975, with the founding of the Oak Brook Historical Society that created a Heritage Center with exhibits, meeting space, and a research library.
