Jerry I. Siegel, a senior at Illinois State University, works briefly as a mover at a local company. Repeatedly refused a sales position, he offers to work for free in exchange for a chance to learn the business. By the time he graduates, Siegel is the company’s top salesman.


With one truck and two employees, Siegel starts his own moving company, Midway Moving and Storage, in his parents’ basement in Skokie, Illinois. Two years later, the company moves to a larger facility – the back of Siegel’s parents’ restaurant at Sheridan and Montrose in Chicago.

The Illinois Commerce Commission recognizes Midway Moving and Storage as the largest residential moving company in Illinois.

Midway becomes the Official Movers of the internationally acclaimed Summer Public Art Program, “Chicago Cows on Parade.”

Midway becomes a major supporter of the Glass Slipper Project, an organization that provides free gowns for low-income high school girls so they can attend their senior proms.

Midway becomes the Official Mover of the Chicago Bulls by entering into a five-year sponsorship, the first in franchise history.

Midway is selected by the Chicago Housing Authority to help in the unprecedented five-year relocation plan for the residents of Cabrini Green.

Midway Moving and Storage reaches 10,000 annual moves and is recognized by National Van Lines as the agent with the second highest gross sales in the country.

Midway begins its tradition of hosting the Annual Holiday Initiative Dinner Party, which provides dinner, entertainment, and gifts for 500 children of Chicago Housing Authority residents.

Midway renews its partnership with the Chicago Summer Public Art Program, becoming the Official Mover of “Suite Home Chicago.”

Midway begins participating in Mayor Daley’s Kidstart Program, which provides employment to low income students.

Midway Moving and Storage celebrates the grand opening of its new corporate headquarters, Mover Training Center and state-of-the-art storage warehouse, outfitted with smoke detectors, sprinklers, security cameras, and a barcode system to accurately and efficiently track inventory.

President and CEO Jerry I. Seigel is named Honorary Mayor by the Little City Foundation.

Midway Moving and Storage moves more than 2,000 voting machines from the Chicago Board of Elections to hundreds of polling places throughout the city for the Aldermanic elections.

Midway sponsors the first-ever Windows of Opportunity “Back to School Bash,” a day-long festival designed to enthuse children who live in CHA units about going back to school.

Midway launches Midway Document Destruction with a new, state-of-the-art shredding facility at its West Side headquarters.

Midway Moving becomes the Official Mover of Fashion Focus Chicago, a weeklong celebration of Chicago’s thriving fashion industry.

Midway Document Destruction launches Midway Mentors in partnership with Waukegan Student Connections. The Midway Mentors curriculum is designed to teach students sales and marketing skills and give them work experience in a real-world environment.

Midway participates in the Waukegan American Independence Parade and the Deerfield Lions Club Parade, as well as Chicago’s Disability Day Parade. Midway’s interactive float, which features basketball hoops and Midway “Cows on Parade,” is a crowd favorite.

Midway and the Bulls break their own record, collecting 20,034 pounds of food during their annual Holiday Food Drive.

Midway Moving and Tyrus Thomas sponsor Thomas’ Holiday Home Makeover, surprising a needy family with an early Christmas.

Midway marks its 10th year as a major supporter of the Glass Slipper Project. To date, Midway has helped the Glass Slipper Project provide prom gowns for 16,000 underprivileged high-school girls.

Midway continues its sponsorship of the Little City Used Book Sale, which raises more than $200,000 dollars for children and adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities it serves throughout the Chicago region.

Midway Document Destructions holds its first Shred-a-thon, a community event that provides free shredding services area residents.

Midway Moving and Storage, the Windows of Opportunity organization and the Chicago Housing Authority team up with platinum-selling rapper Snoop Dogg to host the School is Cool Back-to-School event for students living in CHA properties.

Midway sponsors the Chicago Bulls Holiday Food Drive for the Greater Chicago Food Depository. The Food Drive raises more than 10,000 pounds of food for Chicago families in need.

Midway and the Deerfield Parent Network sponsor a public speaking engagement for parents with bullying expert Barbara Coloroso.

Midway Moving and Storage and the Chicago Bulls announce a new three-year agreement that designates Midway the Official Mover of the Chicago Bulls.

Midway sponsors Little City’s Annual Dinner Gala, honoring Mayor Richard M. Daley, at the Shedd Aquarium.

Midway Moving and the Chicago Bulls team up to hold the Holiday Food Drive, which collects more than 35,000 pounds of food for the Greater Chicago Food Depository.

Through its Holiday Home Makeover, Midway provides three resident families of the Chicago Housing Authority with new furniture so they can comfortably enjoy the holiday season in their homes.
