A Model Planned Community
Designed by Calvert Vaux and Frederick Law Olmstead in 1869, Riverside was incorporated by 1875. Most of it is part of a National Historic Landmark known as the Riverside Landscape Architecture District, which was designated in 1970. Its population peaked in 1970, but many of its bungalows and large Victorian homes from the early 20th century have been well-preserved.
